Grasses have modified large landscape areas in Hawaii and the Pacific and often outcompete other plant communities. Abandoned landscapes are particularly prone to the grass-fire cycle. These factors limit the recovery of functional watersheds and habitat. Improved grass suppression can improve native forest restoration and reduce wildfire occurrence.
