We used a value of information approach to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of using satellite imagery as part of the Burn Area Emergency Response (BAER), a US federal program that identifies imminent post-wildfire threats to human life and safety,...
Welcome to the ArcBurn Resource Library
The ArcBurn project is designed to integrate cultural resources information into fire management decision processes. This extends beyond NHPA compliance and requires a collaborative approach among fire scientists, forest ecologists, archaeologists, and fire managers to ensure that the best science is effectively and appropriately used to guide management plans; and that these plans are defensible and reasonable under dynamic environmental conditions. One objective of the project is to quantify the direct effects of heat treatment (e.g. wildfires) and the indirect effects of wildfires (e.g. erosion) on prehistoric cultural resources including stone tool (lithic) assemblages, ceramics, and architectural stone. Other objectives include evaluating and synthesizing available field data, management plans, and lessons learned; integrating project results into a Knowledge Synthesis and operational/decision support tools; and providing tech transfer/science applications support. To help meet those objectives, two pre-defined searches of the FRAMES Resource Catalog are provided below: 1) Fire and Cultural Resources, and 2) Fire and Archaeology. Funding for this project is provided by the Joint Fire Science Program. For more information, please visit the project's website.

As a multi-jurisdictional, non-fire-adapted region, the Sonoran Desert Ecoregion is a complex, social-ecological system faced increasingly with no-analogue conditions. A diversity of management objectives and activities form the socioecological...
There is a long history of fire management in African savannas, but knowledge of historical and current use of fire is scarce in savanna-woodland biomes. This study explores past and present fire management practices and perceptions of the Khwe (former...
Evacuation of residents during wildfire is a highly time-sensitive process. Available time may be limited. Previous research on other types of incident demonstrate that individuals delay their evacuation by first undertaking actions in response to the...
Copper-based algaecides are usually used for controlling algae bloom triggered by the elevated levels of nutrients after wildfires, resulting in the promoted reactivity of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in forming disinfectant byproducts (DBPs). To...
Contemporary fire literature describes past and present fires in Labrador forests as part of a natural and recurrent disturbance regime, with lightning the primary ignition source in an uninhabited wilderness. However, earlier European observers...
In order to meet preidentified objectives, prescribed burns are lit under specific conditions to produce desirable results such as favorable plant response, healthy forest and rangeland conditions for grazing and wildlife habitat, silvicultural...
Recent wildland fire disasters have attracted interest from a variety of disciplines seeking to reduce impacts of fire on people and natural resources. Architecture, insurance and reinsurance, city and county government, and engineering sectors have...
Aim
Long‐term ecological data provide a stepped frame of island ecosystem transformation after successive waves of human colonization, essential to determine conservation and management baselines. However, the timing and ecological impact of...
Piñon-juniper vegetation types, including juniper woodland and savannah, piñon-juniper, and piñon woodland, cover approximately 40 million ha in the western United States, where they provide ecosystem services, wildlife habitat, and cultural and...

The creation and modification of landscape patterns through interactions among people and the environment is a defining focus in the discipline of geography. Here, we contribute to that tradition by placing 500 years of red pine (Pinus resinosa) tree-...
Charcoal analysis, applied in sediment facies analysis of the Pecora river palaeochannel (Tyrrhenian southern Tuscany, Italy), detected the occurrence of past fire events in two different fluvial landforms at 800–450 BC and again at AD 650–1300. Taking...
Context
Though people have used fire to alter landscapes across North America for millennia, there remains a debate whether Native Americans altered California’s mountainous forests to create an anthropogenic landscape.
Objective
...
Warm summer temperatures and longer fire seasons are promoting larger, and in some cases, more fires that are severe in low- and mid-elevation, dry mixed-conifer forests of the Northern Rocky Mountains (NRM). Long-term historical fire conditions and...
This work introduces a methodology for assessing near-future fire weather pattern changes based on the Canadian Fire Weather Index system components (Fire Weather Index (FWI), Initial Spread Index (ISI), Fire Severity Rating (FSR)), applied in...
The lack of scientific information about the effects of wildfire on prehistoric structures and rock art, such as dolmens and petroglyphs, impedes the development of conservation guidelines. In this study, the impact of a recent wildfire (late 2017) on...
In Australia, the drivers of precolonial fire regimes remain contentious, with some advocating an anthropogenic-dominated regime, and others highlighting the importance of climate, climatic variability or alternatively some nexus between climate and...
Here, we show that the last century of fire suppression in the western U.S. has resulted in fire intensities that are unique over more than 900 years of record in ponderosa pine forests (Pinus ponderosa). Specifically, we use the heat-sensitive...
The Changbai Mountains forest ecosystem is one of the best-preserved temperate mountain forest ecosystems in Asia. Since the establishment of the reserve in 1960, extensive forest fires have been excluded as a result of strict regulation and...
Disentangling the role of natural and anthropogenic factors is a major challenge in paleofire studies. Here, we introduce the molecular biomarkers of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs), combined with charcoal and black carbon in sediments of...
