Workshops, Trainings and Fieldtrips

Location

Sheraton Salt Lake City Hotel, Salt Lake City, UT

A pre-conference workshop, Assessing Wildfire Hazards in the Home Ignition Zone, will once again be offered November 12-13 with instructors, Jack Cohen, Physical Research Scientist, USDA Forest Service, and Pat Durland, President and Wildland Fire Consultant, Stone Creek Fire.

Learn the many steps that can be taken to assess hazards and recommend appropriate mitigation measures to reduce the loss of lives and homes from wildfires.

This 2-day seminar will help you to identify hazards and reduce risks in the home ignition zone before a wildfire starts. Wildland fire agencies have largely been unable to reduce wildland/urban interface destruction through traditional fire response procedures. Recent research has led to a greater understanding of how wildland fires ignite homes. By applying new knowledge of how wildland/urban interface fires occur and by using new approaches, future wildland/urban interface fire disasters can be significantly reduced.

This workshop incorporates NFPA 1141: Standard for Fire Protection Infrastructure for Land Development in Suburban and Rural Areas and NFPA 1144: Standard for Reducing Structure Ignition Hazards from Wildland Fire, as the basis for assessing hazards and recommending appropriate mitigation measures to reduce wildfire risks to homes, developments, communities, and subdivisions and to increase awareness among residents and communities.

This is an optional workshop held before the NFPA's Backyards & Beyond Wildland Fire Education Conference on November 14-16, 2013.
