A recent spruce bark beetle outbreak killed a large number of spruce trees in the Anchorage wildland-urban interface. Wildland fire managers believe the city is exposed to a significant wildfire risk due to the large number of people that live in the Anchorage bowl and the large number of dead spruce stands in the wildland-urban interface. The Municipality of Anchorage has partnered with local, state, and federal agencies to develop strategies to address the risk of wildfire, including risk mapping and fuel type modeling. By using satellite imagery, geographic information systems and a recognized fire behavior model, priorities can be assigned to mitigation and preparedness activities.
