During the summer of 2000 and spring of 2001 Alaska Fire Service (AFS) completed three hazard fuel break projects on military owned lands adjacent to three residential areas (Shannon Park, Hamilton Acres, and Clear Creek Subdivision West). Shaded fuel breaks were created to provide defensible space in the event of a fire on military lands. Black spruce (Picea mariana) white spruce (P. glauca) trees were thinned to a minimum spacing of 6 feet along an 80 foot wide corridor. The lower branches on the remaining spruce trees were pruned to eliminate ladder fuels. All live hardwoods were left uncut. The thinning was completed during the fall of 2000 for Shannon Park, and May of 2001 for Hamilton Acres and Badger Gate (Clear Creek Subdivision West) by Alaska Fire Service field crews and EFF crews.
