As the first responders to wildfires, local fire districts and departments need to be ready to battle fires with good equipment that helps protect lives and property in rural areas. One example is Stevens County Fire District #5. This small fire district in Addy, WA, serves about 5,000 people over 75 square miles. The district runs five stations, all staffed by volunteers, with a structure engine, a brush truck, and a fire tender. About 40 percent of the district’s calls are for wildfires.
