About 2.3 million acres were burned by wildfires in Alaska in 1977, an exceptionally bad year when the reversal of normal patterns of rainfall caused an unusually dry August. Major fires are described and the ways in which they were tackled are outlined. Resource Impact Advisory Groups were used during the fire season to assess potential damage associated with the alternative suppression methods available at each fire.
