Landcover data and bobwhite hunting records were used to assess northern bobwhite habitat utilization during 1993-1994. Landscape-scale analyses of standardized bobwhite covey densities and habitat composition and configuration indicated that bobwhite densities were positively associated with percentage agriculture and food plot habitat (reaching a maximum at 30-35% agriculture), positively associated with mean patch size of fields and food plots (reaching a maximum at approximately 2 ha), and nominally associated with agricultural mean shape index. Landscapes comprised of >30% agriculture dispersed in large food plots (2-3 ha) may be more beneficial to bobwhites than landscapes containing numerous very small food plots (0.1 ha) interspersed throughout a forest matrix, or landscapes in which all agricultural areas are confined to one or a few patches. Results of this and related ongoing studies have important implications for both landscape design and multiple use resource management activities. © 1998 by the American society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.
