From the text ... 'A constant association of wood fungi, called bluestains (Ceratostomella) and barkbeetles was obvious. This suggested the aid of [a] forest pathologist was needed. Their studies supported the theory that it was actually these bluestains that quickly permeated the sapwood thus shutting off the movement of water to the leaves with 10-14 days. It was shown that these fungi could only develop when the moisture content of this sapwood was below normal, a condition that developed during drought periods. The fires killed the competing hardwoods providing more moisture for the pines.'
