An overview is given of recent research on forest fires, particularly climate change and its implications for forest fire and vegetation zoning in Russian and Canadian boreal forests, fire emissions and their impact on the atmosphere, the predicted catastrophic effects on global climate as a result of biomass burning in the tropics, and the protocol of the international conference on climate change held in Kyoto, Japan.
