Drought indexes are not designed to measure fuel moistures, rather they indicate environmental conditions that affect fuel profiles. Management should consider that the mid-to upper-600 range is the limit of acceptability for igniting prescribed fires of any type unless specific locality conditions dictate otherwise. The ideal time for understory prescribed burning in the South is within the first 2 or 3 days after precipitation.
