An aerial ignition system using and incendiary device and a helicopter can be used to backburn a large area safely and completely. The system was used to backburn 4,800 acres and helped bring under control a large fire in February 1986. The system and the conditions under which it was used are described, and a brief account is given of the behavior of the backfire. © Institute of Foresters of Australia.
