To sum up, policy, strategy, personnel and equipment employed to suppress forest and range fires has changed dramatically over the past 70-year history of the Forest Service. Most of this change has come during the past 25 years, with the establishment of research laboratories and equipment development centers. If this momemtum is maintained, even greater advances will be made in the next quarter century. The lone man on horseback, scanning the forest for telltale smoke, is now history.
