[from the text] Fire has been an integral part of the ecology of southwestern ecosystems. The effect of fire in these ecosystems has been beneficial or detrimental, depending upon the nature of the fire, the characteristics of the fire site, and the values of the natural resources affected by the fire. In this paper, the opportunities for the use of fire as a tool to satisfy a management objective in southwestern ecosystems will be explored through a review of the literature.
