The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

An inventory of particulate matter and air toxic emissions from prescribed fires in the USA for 1989
This report documents a prescribed fire emissions inventory developed using consistent methodology for each of the 50 states of the USA for calendar year 1989. Emissions of particulate matter, selected toxic compounds, and a few other carbon-containing compounds are estimated.…

A simple, inexpensive, and relatively accurate photographic method for date collection is described. Objects of interest are triangulated from films taken simultaneously at two camera positions. Accumulated synchronization and measurement errors amounted to 0.2 - 0.5 meter. The…

The impacts of autumn or spring burning on Symphoricarpos occidentalis were studied in Fescue Prairie in central Saskatchewan. Symphoricarpos density increased two- to three-fold over preburn density in the 1st 2 growing seasons following a burn. Individual shoot weights were…

From the Summary ... 'Fire, whether wild or controlled, has been shown to benefit big game in a variety of ways. Following fire, understory vegetation usually reestablishes more luxuriant than before, often increasing carrying capacity for big game several-fold. In addition, new…

From the Discussion and Summary ... 'The data and observations presented here are fragmentary and are not adequate to establish that smoke from wildfires or prescribed burns markedly affects microbial activity in wildland plant communities. They suggest, however, that such…

From the Summary and Conclusions ... 'Large wildfires in the early 1900's burned over many of the low elevation forests in northern Idaho. Seral plant communities of grasses, forbs, and shrubs followed these wildfires and created important big game winter ranges. Redstem…

Increased seed yields often result when alfalfa fields are burned in spring. The main pollinator of seed alfalfa in Alberta is the alfalfa leafcutter bee. Megachile rotundata (F.). that cuts pieces of leaves to build thimble-like cells. One hypothesis for increased seed yield is…

The Department of Interior is actively engaged in the smoke management business from two apparently opposite viewpoints. In one case we are trying to prevent or extinguish wildfires and minimize adverse effects on air quality as well as other resources. On the other hand we are…

Mechanized full-tree logging is the preferred harvesting system in Northeastern Ontario. These operations typically involve roadside delimbing, producing large quantities of slash at roadsides and landings. Slash pile burning involves gathering the slash into concentrated areas…

Traditionally, in the Southwest, ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) red slash has not been treated with fire to meet resource objectives until all slash has fully cured, usually a 2-to-4-year wait. Waiting for slash to cure is still the widespread practice on most forests in the…
