The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

From the conclusions:'Two of the four chemicals (polymers) and support equipment tested were found acceptable for use by the Forest Service-the Hexcel Hydropak and the Nalco polymer feed system. Use of the Hecel or Nalco system in a horizontal hose lay will, in effect, allow the…

From the conclusion:'It seems reasonable, therefore, to conclude that the procedure of seeding towering cumulus clouds to induce rain on forest fires shows good prospects for reducing overall fire fighting costs as well as reducing fire damage.'

The instantaneous temperature fluctuations in a turbulent stoichiometric methane-air flame were measured with an iridium hot-wire. Near the flame front, high amplitude narrow temperature "spikes” were observed and their probability distribution function and average time duration…

From the text... 'Large-scale efforts to control undesirable woody species has awaited mass production of machinery to do the job effectively and economically. Our modern age of large-scale operations tends to overlook, however, that many small-scale efforts using homemade hand…

The Department of Interior is actively engaged in the smoke management business from two apparently opposite viewpoints. In one case we are trying to prevent or extinguish wildfires and minimize adverse effects on air quality as well as other resources. On the other hand we are…

A computer simulation model of lightning fire discoveries has been developed by analyzing historical records of lightning fire occurrences. The model is being tested by using reports of lightning fires from four national forests. Results to date suggest that statistical…

'We have read the recent review article 'Primary and Secondary Particulates as Pollutants' by P. F. Fennelly with considerable interest, but yet, concern. Our interest is based on an awareness of the need to examine particulate pollution in terms of particle size and chemical…

The principle of operation of a wideband crossed loop magnetic-field direction finder is studied by comparing the bearing determined from the NS and EW magnetic fields at various times up to 155 mu-s after return stroke initiation with the TV-determined lightning channel base…

At the request of the World Meteorological Organization, a hierarchical system for rating forest fire danger was developed. The system uses generally available meteorological measurements to evaluate the flammability of wildland fuels anywhere in the world. The basic framework…

Mass divergence influences on plume dispersion modify classic Gaussian calculations by as much as a factor of two in complex terrain. The Gaussian plume was derived in flux form to include this process.

In summary, there are some individuals who see prescribed fire, especially wilderness fires, as a threat to the fire prevention program. Others are equally frustrated because they feel the simplistic message of Smokey is in opposition to, or makes it more difficult to achieve,…
