The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

The present-day northern Rocky Mountain vegetation is the product of a long history of geologic and climatic events that have interacted with the species populations composing the regional flora. General concepts relating to the organization, classification, and dynamic nature…

Restricted in size and surrounded by a modified, even alien environment, fragmented ecosystems can suffer a loss of biological diversity, most noticeably through the extinction of species. The extinction process that occurs as result of gragmentation can be divided into four…

Natural areas usually are selected for protection according to the elements contained within them. A focus on content alone, however, is incomplete because the structure and use of the surrounding landscape will determine whether a 'protected area' will be able to maintain the…

To combat the major problem of lightning-caused forest fires in British Columbia, the British Columbia Ministry of Forests operates a lightning locating system developed by Lightning Location and Protection Inc. As of 1985, this network consisted of 18 magnetic direction finders…

Results from an extensive vegetation survey of 197 boreal forest stands, encompassing a full spectrum of succession and site types in the regions of Ontario and Quebec south of James Bay, are reported. Non-centered principal component analysis plus varimax rotation (nodal…

Soil surface temperatures averaged 186, 398 and 393 C for grass, shrub and forest communities, respectively. Higher temperatures were associated with head fires, more fuel and with woody fuels. Temperatures in headfires were higher but more variable than in backfires for the…

A single thallus of Erioderma pedicellatum has been found in Newfoundland near one of the 2 North American localities known thus far for this unusual lichen. Whereas almost all of the other species of the genus have tropical to subtropical affinities in their distribution and…

Seed traps were installed at seven sites along a transect in a burned mixedwood forest site in northern Saskatchewan to determine annual seed inputs. The seeds were returned to the laboratory for germination and identification. A total of 1698 seeds was collected in the 1977-…

At the northern limit of red pine (Pinusresinosa Ait.) fire may be of critical importance in determining the persistence of red pine and its restriction to islands and shores of lakes. The objectives of the study were to document the distribution pattern of red pine populations…

It is often quite difficult to compare fire history studies conducted by different investigators because different terms may be used to refer to the same concept and the same term may be used to refer to different concepts. To help resolve this difficulty, an ad hoc committee…

Dendrochronology, the study of annual rings in woody plants, has developed into a useful tool for a number of different fields of study. Based on the interaction of trees and the climate, it is possible to use tree-rings as proxy data in reconstruction of past climates and river…

The contributions of expanded continental ice, reduced atmospheric carbon dioxide, and changes in land albedo to the maintenance of the climate of the last glacial maximum (LGM) are examined. A series of experiments is performed using an atmosphere-mixed layer ocean model in…

A method is proposed for predicting a probabilistic distribution of fire behavior. A fire model gives conditional distributions of the physical fire site parameters one would observe for given fire states. The probabilistic prediction is provided by Bayes formula and knowledge…
