The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Fuel complexes resulting from power-saw spacing in young coastal Douglas-fir and interior lodgepole pine stands were quantitatively assessed for loading and duration of hazard. Fuel appraisal data were combined with fire weather regimes to derive fire behavior predictions for…

In analyzing fire management programs for their economic efficiency, it is necessary to assign monetary values to the changes in resource outputs caused by fire. The derivation of resource values is complicated by imperfect or nonexistent commericial market structures. The…

From the book jacket...'From prehistory to the present-day conservation movement, Stephen J. Pyne's narrative explores the efforts of sucessive American cultures to master this forbidding kind of fire and to use it to shape the landscape. He draws not only on academic experience…

From the text: 'With respect to traditional uses of fire, the Indians of northern Alberta exhibited a clear understanding of both what was happening as well as why things happened. They exhibited full understanding of systemic, relational effects of burning in their discussions…

This paper describes a finite difference experiment to simulate the transient development of the convection column above a strip of uniform high temperature source in a stratified uniform cross flow atmosphere. The k--e model of turbulence is used and an upstream weighted scheme…

The burning prescription is an integral part of the silvicultural prescription. Writing these prescriptions for site preparation objectives involves close coordination between the fire manager and silviculturist. A negotiating period during the sale planning process is necessary…

Because standard methods for computing the optimal rotation age of a forest stand assume complete knowledge of the stand value at any future time, a forest manager must treat his estimates of future value as if they were completely accurate. Minor, unpredictable fluctuations…

In this paper we re-examine the problem of optimal forest fire suppression which was previously studied by Parks. The growth of the fire is modelled by a deterministic differential equation in which the level of the suppression forces appears as a control variable. After…

From the text... 'But with the advent of fire protection in the South, game birds decreased much as pasturage had and as grouse populations had in Britain. The vegetative ensemble that sustained maximum populations gave way to roughage and woods. By 1923 hunting plantations in…

From the text... 'It is often assumed that the American Indian was incapable of greatly modifying his environment and that he would not have been much interested in doing so if he did have the capabilities. In fact, he possessed both the tool and the will to use it. That tool…

The Chief of the USDA's Forest Service considers fire equal to such perennial controversies as inflation, herbicies, log exports and timber management practices. The revised USFS fire policy calls for fire management; the previous policy specified fire control. The ultimate…

Spontaneous ignition resulting from slow oxidation of combustible material can be an industrial fire hazard. The problems are fairly well recognised. This paper describes a simple and powerful test method which can be used to assess the spontaneous ignition hazard of particulate…
