The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Development of equations for prediciting fuel bed depth (called 'bulk depth' herein) appropriate for modeling fire behavior in slash is described. Bulk depth (y) was correlated with the expected number of 1/4-to 1-inch-diameter particle intercepts per foot of vertical plane…

Damage appraisal is the basis for fire-suppression decisions. Where timber is managed for production of maximum site rent, appraisal is a rather straightforward matter of applying standard financial criteria in a 'with and without' procedure. Where the aim is maximum mean annual…

Changing the display format is the least painful way for the fire manager to reduce the cost of AFFIRMS. Some ways to cut costs: •Suppress the headings only if 7 more than three headings can be saved •Pick the shortest display consistent with your needs •Don't use the special…

This paper examines two sets of decision rules for planning-the economic benefit-cost analysis and the sociological approach-and points the way toward a useful integration. A synthesis provides the means, both conceptual and practical, to aid the decision-maker in selecting…

Annual aboveground wood increment in the world's forests is approximately 12.9 billion metric tons. At 50 percent accessibility, about 6.5 billion tons are available for all wood uses. On the assumptions of 3.5 x 10 (6) kcal/ton of air-dried wood, a thermal-electric conversion…

Rhizome occurrence and root structure of Vaccinium membranaceum were investigated by hydraulic excavation. Numerous, robust rhizomes were present. Taproots were not observed. V. membranaceum rhizomes sprouted vigorously after a light surface fire killed the shoots. They may be…
