The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Summary (Do Not Cite): Fecal pellet samples were analyzed by the Comp Analysis Lab at Ft. Collins, CO to assess food habits. Delta caribou averaged 59 ¦ 21% lichens and 23 ¦ 21 % moss in their fecal pellets. WACH (3 samples from Pah and Indian rivers) averaged 54, 59, and 74 %…

As of 1992, beetle-caused spruce mortality ranged from 8 to 68% of the spruce component within 5 sample areas. Continued beetle activity and tree mortality are expected for at least the next two to three years. Management alternatives are discussed.

During the winter of 1981, a windstorm caused extensive blowdown in the Yakutat area. In 1988, 20 permanent plots were established to monitor spruce beetle activity. A reevaluation of these plots in 1991 revealed low spruce beetle populations and minimal tree mortality since…

From objectives (page 2): 'The project objectives are: 1) determine if fires around lake and wetland margins affect the flow of nutrients into the wetlands, 2) determine of an increased flow of nutrients in wetlands from fire influences waterbird densities on the wetlands, and…

Guiding principles based on conservation biology are applied in assessing ecosystem needs. Ecosystem, economic, and social needs are integrated in a decision model in which the guiding principles are used as a primary filter for evaluating proposed actions. Management practices…

During the summer of 1988, a number of unusually large forest fires occurred in the interior region of Alaska. Subsequently, many local residents voiced concern over the fire management policy because it only provided limited fire suppression in the remote area. The primary…

Waterfowl brood surveys were conducted in the Pah River Flats, Alaska during July of 1993. Although spring flooding was extensive, duck production was greater than previous estimates from 1989. A large portion of the study area had burned in a lightning-caused wildfire in the…

Spruce beetle declined slightly, by 80,000 acres, in 1994. Hardwood defoliation declined from 113,000 acres in 1993 to only 24,221 acres in 1994. Spruce forests, however, showed an increase of insect activity of nearly 200,000 acres primarily due to the budworm outbreak near…

The importance of case histories and/or studies of wildfire have been highlighted by fire control, fire research, and fire weather personnel (e..g., Turner et al. 1961; Luke and McArthur 1978). Chandler (1976) notes that 'Time and time again case histories have proven their…
