The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Holland, Steyn
The radiant energy income of a slope influences its ambient temperatures and water movements, both of which are important controls on the growth behaviour, species composition and structure of its vegetation cover. Therefore, information about the radiation environments of…

This report presents the equations for the new 1976 metric version of the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index. In addition to the changes needed to accommodate metric weather data, several mathematical improvements are introduced as well. These eliminate certain anomalies in the…

This Report is a technical comparison of the American and Canadian systems of forest fire danger rating. It deals with the three fuel moisture indicators in each system, as well as the indexes of spread and energy release or buildup. The final comparison is between the American…

The mechanism of wood burning has been subjected to mathematical analysis. Extensive finite-difference computations for symmetrical and nonsymmetrical heating of flat wood slabs have provided results which appear to shed additional light upon the mechanisms leading to stable…

From the text... 'The final conclusion was, then that for the type of slash studied there is no need to adjust the slash hazard index for exposure through that part of the fire season when wildfires are more likely to occur but, if the ratings are to be used as guides in fall…

Spontaneous and piloted ignition of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Laws.) needles were investigated in an isothermal atmosphere. Four levels of sample moisture content were tested and minimum heat flux intensities required to produce ignition, times to ignition, and surface…

Young jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) were defoliated manually to measure the effects of defoliation on growth of this species, and to determine the relative efficiency of foliage of different ages with respect to growth. The removal of 2-year-old or 3-year-old foliage had no…

The specification of moisture contents in forest fuels is an integral part of any workable fire-danger rating system. This paper presents a linear model for estimating the moisture content of the 100-hour timelag fuels. The variables in the model include yesterday's computed…

The general objectives of this project are to evaluate the effects of the independent variables of fuel, fuel bed, fuel base, and atmospheric conditions on the dependent variables such as rate of burning, flame size, rate of energy released, and others which are concerned with…

Several fire retardants in current use were dropped from the Canadair CL-215 to determine drop height effects and for evaluation of the tank and gating system. This was accomplished through the quantification and analysis of the characteristics of the ground distribution…

Describes an algorithm for separating fuel depth data into distinctive groups of measurements. The algorithm is justified heuristically, through its mathematical similarity to the "tuner" of a radio receiver. Test data generated artificially were used to maximize the sensitivity…
