The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Alston, Freeman
This paper examines two sets of decision rules for planning-the economic benefit-cost analysis and the sociological approach-and points the way toward a useful integration. A synthesis provides the means, both conceptual and practical, to aid the decision-maker in selecting…

The traditional notion that all fires need to be put out immediately is no longer the only approach to fire management. Rather, land managers are challenged to make situation-specific decisions with each fire start. There are situations when the decision involves suppression…

This country was founded on a belief that citizens should be involved in decisions affecting their lives. The costs of such involement may be high in particular instances, but equity may be more important than efficiency. The national forest planning process has been difficult…

The specification of moisture contents in forest fuels is an integral part of any workable fire-danger rating system. This paper presents a linear model for estimating the moisture content of the 100-hour timelag fuels. The variables in the model include yesterday's computed…

Stability of the atmosphere at different levels is one important factor affecting the behavior of forest fires, but the measurement of stability and other atmospheric phenomena is complex and difficult. The acoustic echo sounder shows promise for measuring these parameters and…

For reasons of economy it may be necessary to close one or several fire-weather stations in a protection area. Since it is logical to close those stations that will have the least impact on the ability of the fire manager to assess overall fire danger, it is desirable to know if…

Several fire retardants in current use were dropped from the Canadair CL-215 to determine drop height effects and for evaluation of the tank and gating system. This was accomplished through the quantification and analysis of the characteristics of the ground distribution…

Satellite imagery is a valuable tool for environmental monitoring of natural and man-made events. Analysis of imagery within a few hours is vital if these data are to be used to respond to rapidly changing conditions. Since April of 1982 Landsat imagery from the Quick-Look…
