The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

In most of their arctic and subarctic ranges reindeer, caribou and muskoxen adopt generalist foraging strategies; they consume a wide variety of plants even though they feed selectively. This paper analyses some aspects of selective feeding behavior and its possible influence on…

White, Trudell
Habitat preference by caribou (Rangifer tarandus grantii Allen.) and forage selection and consumption by tame reindeer (R. t. tarandus L.) were studied near Atkasook, Alaska, for 3 yr. Small groups of caribou were present in both winter and summer. Winter habitat use was…

Eighty black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) trees from four pulpwood stands in north central Ontario were sampled to determine crown fuel weights. Crown fuel components, both living and dead, were separated into size classes precise enough for use in forest fire behavior…

Oosenbrug, Theberge
The altitudinal movements, preferred topography and plant communities of 150 to 200 woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) were recorded for two summers. Nine subalpine or alpine tundra communities constituting their major summer range were quantitatively described.…

Moore
An analysis of samples collected in 1976 from 2 sites in mature open spruce/lichen woodland in Quebec, unburned for 105 and 138 yr, and dominated by Picea glauca, P. mariana, Ledum groenlandicum and Betula glandulosa; and from 3 regenerating sites, burned 1, 5 and 45 yr…

Zackrisson
The past and present fire regimes are described, and the significance for the flora of this region is discussed. Methods used to reconstruct forest fire history are presented. The dating problems with false and absent rings in Scots pine, Norway spruce and two birch species…

Wein, Riewe, Methven
This proceedings deals mainly with forest ecosystems (both plant and animal) in Canada and Alaska, with some Finnish experience included. The papers are arranged under the following headings: (1) Resource inventory; (2) Dynamics-nutrient cycling; (3) Dynamics-succession; (4)…

Wein, El-Bayoumi
Concepts of community succession have been viewed from many perspectives because it is such an important aspect of ecology. This paper discusses some of the limitations of the classical concepts of succession when they are applied to northern ecosystems. We attempt to…

Van Everdingen, Allen
Perennial groundwater discharge in a tributary of Donjek River causes severe icing problems at km 1817.5 (mile post 1130) on the Alaska Highway. Surveys of a section across the icing area revealed vertical ground movements of up to 0.92 m between winter and summer. Subsurface…

Van Cleve, Viereck
The structure and function of Alaskan forest ecosystems was examined across two secondary successional sequences. One, the most common in interior Alaska, follows fire in black spruce stands on permafrost sites. The other, less common sequence, follows fire on warmer, generally…

The purpose of the workshop was to exchange information on sampling procedures, research methodologies, preparation and interpretation of specimen material, terminology, and the application and significance of findings, emphasizing the relationship of dendrochronology procedures…

Mortality of young moose calves (Alces alces gigas) was evaluated on the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, during spring and early summer 1977 and 1978. Studies were conducted both inside and outside of a 461-ha browse-rehabilitated area (Willow Lake) where standing vegetation had been…

Reindeer vegetation-type selection, activity, and food habits were studied from 1976 to 1978. Results from aerial surveys and on-ground observations showed a preference for Tussock-Shrub Tundra in spring, Low-Medium Willows in early summer, and Saltgrass Meadows in mid-summer…

The long term fire history at the treeline in Northern Quebec can be evaluated by ecological surveys of the major ecosystems. Available data suggest that fires are presently climate-controlled, and therefore may be used as paleoclimatic indicators. During a cold climatic…

An upland tundra fire, started by lightning, burned 48 km2 near the Kokolik River (69¦ 30' N, 151¦ 59' W) in northwestern Alaska during late July and early August 1977. Permanent plots were established to monitor recovery of severely, moderately, and lightly burned areas as…

Evidence from 10 years of fire records and 300 years of tree ages and fire scars indicate that forest fires in a large area east of Great Slave Lake, N.W.T. are recurrent over a short time interval (<125 years) and related to large scale air mass climate patterns and terrain…
