The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Soil was exposed to red phosphorous/butyl rubber (RP/BR) aerosols at various relative humidities in a recirculating environmental wind tunnel. Soil microbial and enzymatic activities were measured immediately after exposure and periodically thereafter for 56 days. The…

The resprouting response of different sized Banksia oblongifolia lignotubers (genets) was followed in two field experiments. In thefirst, the density and speed of resprouting, and the growth in length of the leading shoot from each lignotuber in response to fire and to the time…

(1)The behaviour of the August 1936 Galatea fire in the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains was reconstructed with respect to the rate of spread, frontal-fire intensity and fuel consumption, and illustrates that tree mortality, seed dispersal distance into the burn and…

Population characteristics of sympatric Testudo hermanni and T graeca were compared at four sites in northern Greece; Alyki, Epanomi, Keramoti and Lagos. These had different habitats and levels of human disturbance. The density of tortoises larger than 10cm was similar at all…

Small experimental plots in mixed-wood stands of the Acadian Forest were burned in the spring, summer, and autumn to obtain an estimate of the regrowth potential of common forest understory species. The number of stems was measured before burning and then monthly for 5 months…

A guidebook has been developed to assist the fire managers and planners in estimating actual economic costs, losses, and benefits resulting from fire management activities. This guidebook was developed and tested on 12 National Forests during the 1977-79 period. The procedures…

This report contains an annotated bibliography of the effects of fire, logging, grazing, and spraying on small mammals and their predators. Each citation lists keywords. A brief summary of the general effects of fire on some of the more common small mammals in western coniferous…

Emission factors and the size distribution for smoke particles from prescribed fire are described from data collected by airborne sampling, surface sampling using towers, and combustion hood systems. Emission factors for particulate matter (g/kg) range from 4 to 16 for particles…

Prescribed burning is extensively used in wildlife, forest, and range management, and in maintaining biotic diversity. Burning tends to increase food and/or favourable habitat conditions for many upland game and waterfowl species. Prescribed burning in forest management is used…

The mixedwood forest is defined as a successional mosaic of stratified mixed stands of disturbance (mainly wildfire) origin. The effect of long-term exclusion of fire is discussed. A plea is made for a 'let-burn' policy in parks and improved silviculture for maintaining the…

The advent of 'fire management' has increased the need to understand and predict fire effects on vegetation. Such prediction is greatly complicated by the many factors that influence fire characteristics and plant response. Nevertheless, a few approaches have been developed to…
