The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

The elements of a theory for the process of free spread of fire through brush are presented in terms of simple stepwise processes, which are analyzed separately but joined by their common physical parameters. The stepwise processes analyzed are: (1) Preheating (by radiation) and…

Recent attempts to model the flow in very hot fire plumes where radiative transport of heat may significantly modify both the dynamics of the flow and the processes of combustion have met with only partial success. This paper gives an account of a model for the flow in a…

'The Forest Fire Research Institute has been studying the use of air tankers in fire control for several years. The most recent project involves the development of a computer simulation model to determine air tanker productivity (Simard, 1975). As part of that project, an…

From the text: 'This report summarizes AIRPRO. Its purpose is to give the reader a general impression of what the program does. Detailed documentation is not being generally distributed because 1) the cost of printing a large number of copies would be prohibitive, and 2) it is…

Some basic concepts from the general theory of systems are presented. Six characteristics common to all systems (components, structure, resources, process, control, and objectives)are disussed and related to a fire management context. Wildland fire mangement is examined from a…

A method is presented for computing fine fuel moisture content at hourly intervals around the clock. It is derived from the standard daily Fine Fuel Moisture Code used in the Canadian system of forest fire danger rating. It produces diurnal cycles of fuel moisture content that…

From the Conclusion: 'The study of secondary productivity in grassland ecosystems is potentially of use in both theoretical and applied ecology. Energy flow studies, far from being complete or obsolete, are really just beginining. We have surprisingly little information on the…

The goal of this study was to develop a decisionmaking tool or modei to be used during timber sale preparation for identifying and evaluating feasible slash treatment alternatives for any set of sale conditions. The goal included four specific objectives: (1) a technique to…

A cloud seeding technique is proposed which has the objective of stimulating rainfall from cumulus clouds drifting over forest fires. Preliminary tests of the ice crystal production capability of the cloud seeding technique were conducted on five cumulus clouds near Yellowknife…

As a part of the continuing fire research programme of the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory, a method was developed which allows direct calculation of the heat combustion of volatile pyrolysis products as the difference between the heat of combustion of unpyrolysed wood and the…

A rate equation for soil-surface moisture fraction is developed which makes use of the more customary bulk soil moisture content, as well as the soil-surface evaporation rate minus precipitation rate. The two empirical constants involved are estimated from soil measurements of…

Economic limitations prevent the mapping over large areas of forest fire fuel types using conventional forestry methods. The information contained in such maps would be a valuable tool for assisting in initial attack planning, presuppression planning and fire growth modelling.…

A study of habitat temperatures of the bark beetle Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins in lodgepole pine
Temperatures were measured at the bark suface and in the subcortical zone of Pinus contorta DOUGLAS var. latifolia ENGLEM. infested by Dendroctonus ponderosae HOPKINS. and compared with similar measurements in non-infested trees and with air temperatures. Subcortical…

A procedure for forecasting the 10-hour timelag fuel moisture was developed from the theory of diffusion in wood. Studies of fuel moisture processes relating meteorological variables, as an external force, to moisture exchange processes in wood are combined here to provide a…

The 1978 National Fire-Danger Rating System (NFDRS) updates the danger rating system developed in the early 1970's and published by Deeming and others in 1972. Numerous changes have been made to correct deficiencies and to incorporate new technology. The most significant of the…

The planar intersect technique involves counting or measuring diameters of woody pieces intersected by a vertical plane. It is based on the line intersect technique, which compares length of a given line and the amount of that line crossed by residue pieces. The sum of circular…
