The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Protection of resources from fire has increased the risk of severe fires and reduced resource values in some ecosystems. Constraints on use of prescribed fire have limited its effectiveness in meeting resource goals. This predicament is discussed by describing the ecological…

Large suppression programs have been organized in an effort to avoid the potentially large damages from wildfires. To help determine the efficient sizes and usage of these programs, simulation models have been developed. Recent widespread implementation of one such model --…

Economic limitations prevent the mapping over large areas of forest fire fuel types using conventional forestry methods. The information contained in such maps would be a valuable tool for assisting in initial attack planning, presuppression planning and fire growth modelling.…

We present a flexible, extensible method for integrating multiple tools into a single large decision support system (DSS) using a forest ecosystem management DSS (NED-2) as an example. In our approach, a rich ontology for the target domain is developed and implemented in the…

The effects of the risk of fire or other unpredictable catastrophe on the optimal rotation period of a forest stand are investigated. It is demonstrated that when fires occur in a time-independent Poisson process, and cause total destruction, the policy effect of the fire risk…

Topography, vegetation, and climate act together to determine thespatial patterns of fires at landscape scales. Knowledge oflandscape-fire-climate relations at these broad scales (1,000s hato 100,000s ha) is limited and is largely based on inferences andextrapolations from fire…

In summary, there are some individuals who see prescribed fire, especially wilderness fires, as a threat to the fire prevention program. Others are equally frustrated because they feel the simplistic message of Smokey is in opposition to, or makes it more difficult to achieve,…

A basic system of forest fire protection standards has been developed. Primary objectives are defined in terms of acceptable burned area. A method is described by which secondary objectives may be calculated in terms of elapsed-time for the performance of specific fire control…

Mass fires are being investigated through a series of large-scale test fires. Preliminary results indicate: (a) air flow patterns that create eddies can result in fire vortices when fires is present; (b) the lower part of the convection column consists of a series of small…
