The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

ANNOTATION: This paper contributes to the identification and analysis of barriers and drivers behind bioenergy market growth. It presents a framework for the analysis of both existing and projected bioenergy market potential, using economic concepts and models from transaction…

This strategic plan is a technical discussion of the implementation and development of models and data systems used to manage the air quality impacts of wildland and prescribed fires. Strategies and priorities in the plan were generated by the Express Team (chartered by the…

Fire managers and safety officers concerned with smoke exposure among fire crews can use electronic carbon monoxide (CO) monitors to track and prevent overexposure to smoke. Commonly referred to as dosimeters, these lightweight instruments measure the concentration of CO in the…

Estimates of percent canopy cover generated by the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) are corrected for crown overlap using an equation presented in this paper. A comparison of the new cover estimate to some others is provided. The cover estimate is one of several describing…

A new feature has been added to the Forest Vegetation Simulator directly providing data for the Stand Visualization System. This feature is the SVS keyword. The new feature is faster, does a better job of maintaining the tree location information, and provides more information…

In early July of 1997, I was assigned to the Inowak Fire in southwest Alaska as a Fire Behavior Analyst (FBAN). The fire started late in June in a Limited Suppression Zone southwest of McGrath, but on July 4 and 5 it made major runs toward three native villages on the…

This study has defined actual reductions in recoverable merchantable volumes per acre in fire-killed pine stands. It has demonstrated that, when more than two years have elapsed, reductions in yield of considerable magnitude due to deterioration as a direct or indirect result of…

Few studies have examined the respiratory effects of multiyear ozone exposures in human populations. We examined associations between current respiratory health status and long-term ozone exposure histories in 520 Yale College (New Haven, CT) students who never smoked.…

The determination of total tree age is usually based on ring counts of increment cores which ideally should pass through tree center. For several reasons the borer does not always "hit the pith," and it becomes necessary to estimate how many rings were missed. The pith locator…

Prescribed burning is used to achieve a variety of silvicultural objectives, including controlling heavy fuel accumulation, exposing mineral soil, releasing available nutrients for seedbed preparation, and controlling certain insects, diseases, and competing vegetation (Hunter…

Time domain reflectometry (TDR) is widely used to measure the soil water contents. The effect of soil composition on TDR calibration has to be quantified to diminish the need in re-calibration of TDR. Objectives of the study were: (a) to evaluate the ability of published models…
