The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

From the text ... 'This paper is an attempt to bring about a better ecological understanding of lightning and lightning fires, as they concern living organsms and their habitat. The comprehension of these forces is difficult because of their great variability....'From the…

From the book jacket...'From prehistory to the present-day conservation movement, Stephen J. Pyne's narrative explores the efforts of sucessive American cultures to master this forbidding kind of fire and to use it to shape the landscape. He draws not only on academic experience…

From the text...'The purpose of this guide is to assist in the operational monitoring and evaluation of prescribed fires. A common approach to monitoring and evaluation will enable prescribed fire managers and resource specialists in different organizations and areas to share…

From the text ... 'The Société de Conservation de l*Outaouais, which protects 80 000 km2 southwestern Quebec timberland against fire, has been experimenting with lightning location systems, in an attempt to minimize the problem of lightning caused fires. The experiments, using…

From the text 'One of the missions of wildland fire management is to integrate fire with other land management activities to achieve desired objectives at the lowest cost. When fire managers know how fires are likely to behave in an area as well as that area*s associated weather…

This note outlines the objectives and problems of prescribed burning as a tool of forest management. The importance of a number of weather factors is discussed and suggestions are presented for provision of effective weather guidance to forest officers concerned with this…

Game theory and decision theory could help a fireboss evaluate strategies to use in forest fire control. This paper describes several types of matrix games, subjective utility, and various criteria for strategy selection. It shows, in scenario forms, how decision theory might be…

Murray, Countryman
Heat-resistant anemometers have been developed for measuring horizontal and vertical air flow in fire behavior studies. The anemometers will continue to produce data as long as the anemometer body is less than 650°F. They can survive brief immersion in flame without major…

Albini, Latham, Baughman
A mathematical model for the near-surface flow of air up a sun-heated slope is derived. The model is used to produce tables and graphs for estimating "midflame" windspeeds as needed for predicting wildland fire behavior. The model applies on open or sparsely-forested slopes when…

Observational evidence from nine crown fires suggests that horizontal roll vortices are a major mechanism in crown-fire spread. Post-burn aerial photography indicates that unburned tree-crown streets are common with crown fire. Investigation of the understory of these crown…

Emori, Saito
The fluid dynamical scaling laws of forest fires are derived by dimensional analysis and a scale model is constructed to investigate a forest fire which seriously injured several fire fighters. The result of the small-scale experiment indicate that a fire whirl could be…

A speculative, phenomenological model is formulated for the time-varying intensity and spread rate of a free-burning fire under the influence of nonsteady wind. The model is linearized by approximations and explicit solutions derived for the amplitude response of spread rate and…

Keetch, Byram
The moisture content of the upper soil, as well as that of the covering layer of duff, has an important effect on the fire suppression effort in forest and wildland areas. In certain forested areas of the United States, fires in deep duff fuels are of particular concern to the…

An empirical representation of the power spectral density of horizontal gustiness near the ground in high winds is combined with a theoretical model for the response of free-burning fires to nonsteady wind to predict the variability of spread rate and intensity of wind-aided…

This paper is a comprehensive review of operational research studies in forest fire management during the years 1961 through 1981. It includes a brief discussion of fire management decision making, summaries of and comments regarding the practical merits of the work that has…
