The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

The Mann Gulch fire, which overran 16 firefighters in 1949, is analyzed to show its probable movement with respect to the crew. The firefighters were smoke-jumpers who had parachuted near the fire on August 5, 1949. While they were moving to a safer location, the fire blocked…

Studies of anticipated effects of global warming tend to concentrate on the physiological limits of individual organisms, and imputed modifications to biome distributions expresed as climax ecosystems. Changes in distributions of individual species and of tree species…

An increase in the use of prescribed fire as a forest management tool is anticipated in Ontario where its use is viewed as a viable method of site preparation for regeneration purposes. Literature available on prescribed burning in the jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) logging…

Knowledge of fire behavior is critical for those who control wildfires. Fire managers must know spread rates and intensity-not just to eventually contain and extinguish the fire but also to keep their fire control personnel safe. Managers realize that weather is paramount in…

Mechanized full-tree logging is the preferred harvesting system in Northeastern Ontario. These operations typically involve roadside delimbing, producing large quantities of slash at roadsides and landings. Slash pile burning involves gathering the slash into concentrated areas…

We describe a mathematical model for the probability that a fireline succeeds in containing a fire. The probability increases as the fireline width increases, and also as the fire's flame length decreases. More interestingly, uncertainties in width and flame length affect the…

Traditionally, in the Southwest, ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) red slash has not been treated with fire to meet resource objectives until all slash has fully cured, usually a 2-to-4-year wait. Waiting for slash to cure is still the widespread practice on most forests in the…

Grazing impact by elk and moose has been a point of concern in Jackson Hole for many years. Concern has been primarily directed toward sparsely vegetated south aspects, aspen stands, and willow bottoms. Numerous transects have quantified heavy forage utilization. Trend studies…

A series of laboratory fire experiments were conducted in fuel beds consisting of either excelsior (wood wool), or 6.35 mm sticks, or a mixture of these. Tests were done both with and without wind. Various characteristics of the fire, including rate of spread and fireline…

An extension of the simple ellipse model of a vegetation fire is presented. This facilitates numerical implementation, and can therefore incorporate irregular topographical features and temporal changes in burning conditions. The model has been encoded into an interactive PC…

Predicting fire behavior in nonuniform fuel arrays is a problem requiring: 1. A method of assessing fuel nonuniformity, 2. A method of simulating fuel nonuniformity, and 3. An algorithm governing fire spread through a simulated array. Satisfying these requirements is the…

A model has been developed for predicting the number of lightning-fire ignitions in wildland fuels. The model is based on both stochastic and physical processes. Stochastic methods are used to generalize the lightning storm characteristics and site conditions that affect the…

Some of you may be like I am: a thick-skinned, hard-of-hearing traditionalist. For many years we fire fighters, fire managers, and resource managers have been bombarded, lambasted and harangued about the need to integrate fire and fire management into plans for managing wildland…

Land use planning has truly reached a high plateau in this country. Planning is firmly entrenched and here to stay. With the population increase and therefore increased resource demands, our resource producing land base is shrinking. We must strive for maximum production on the…

Published data on two sets of experimental fires in jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) forest were subjected to two forms of analysis. The first was a classification into surface fires and two kinds of crown fire, passive and active. In the second, the data were used to develop a…

The policy for dealing with fires on National Forest System lands was changed in 1977, in essence from control to management. The change was based on the knowledge and understanding that fire can result in a positive effect on wildland resources. Land managers were directed to…

Burning has been a traditional component of land clearing operations to eliminate unwanted debris from fields. Burning under the proper conditions can be a cost efficient method of debris removal, and provides nutrient release into the soil. Burning, however, carries with it the…

The Weibull distribution is shown to fit well with empirical data of fire intervals for a population of sites. The distribution demonstrates that the recurrence of fire in the subarctic forests of the Northwest Territories, Canada, is predictable. The three parameters of the…
