The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

From the Conclusions ... 'In addition to being a significant instantaneous global source of atmospheric gases and particulates, burning enhances the biogenic emissions of NO and N2O from the world's soils. Biomass burning affects the reflectivity and emmissivity of the earth's…

One of the main problems associated with small natural reserves is their progressive loss of ecological integrity owing to the influence of surrounding human activities. In southern Quebec (Bas-Saint-Laurent, Canada), peatlands are extensively mined to extract peat for the…

Using a two-locus diallelic population genetic model, we studied the evolution and impact of flammable traits in resprouting plants. A 'flammability locus' determines the flammable character of a plant and the frequency of alleles at this locus affects the probability that any…

Acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase and arylsulfatase activities were determined from organic and mineral soils of a jack pine (Pinus banksiana L.) community 4 years after clear-cutting alone, clear-cutting followed by prescribed burning and clear-cutting followed by…

The predicted increase in climate warming will have profound impacts on forest ecosystems and landscapes in Canada because of increased temperature, and altered disturbance regimes. Climate change is predicted to be variable within Canada, and to cause considerable weather…

The impacts of clear-cutting and clear-cutting followed by prescribed burning on soil microbial diversity and community structure were assessed using sole-carbon-source utilization. Microorganisms were washed from organic and mineral soil samples and used to inoculate Biolog…

Combustion of fossil fuel and vegetation produces large quantities of black canbon particles (BCP) which are dispersed by winds over large areas. Once deposited in the sediment, BCP constitute an historic record of anthropogenic activities and wildfires. For BCP to be…

Studies of shifting cultivation and other slash-and-burn systems over the past 30 years have basically confirmed the conceptual model of carbon and nutrient cycling put forth by Nye and Greenland. The model stresses that soil biological processes should not be viewed in…

Tropical forest felling can be for the purpose of traditional shifting cultivation, after which forest is re-established, or for permanent land-use change, which is defined as deforestation. Recent decades have seen a dramatic increase in tropical deforestation caused by slash-…

During 20 years of climatic warming, drought and increased forest firesbetween 1970 and 1990, DOC concentrations declined by 15--25%in lakesof the Experimental Lakes Area, northwestern Ontario, allowing increasedpenetration of both UV and photosynthetically-active radiation (PAR…

Root ingrowth cores were used to quantify fine root response to nutrient treatments in early and late successional stage black spruce-feathermoss ecosystems that originated from either fire or timber harvesting [cut with protection of regeneration and soils (CPRS)]. Three…

The subhumid boreal forest of western Canada is different today from what it was 25 years ago. Before the 1950s, the main human impacts on this forest were agricultural expansion, escaped settlement fires, and high-grade logging. The latter half of the 20th Century saw increased…

To test the assumption that forest harvesting can maintain wildlife through emulating natural disturbance, we compared small mammal abundance between seven post-fire and nine clearcut plots representing three ages since disturbance (4, 14 and 27 years). On each site, two Victor…

Lightning is thought to represent an important source of tropospheric reactive nitrogen species NOx (NO + NO2), but estimates of global production of NOx by lightning vary considerably. We evaluate the production of NOx by lightning using a global chemical/transport model,…

We argue that sequestering of carbon waste is inherently more efficient and will probably cost less than using the carbon for biomass burning. The ratio of carbon emitted per unit of primary energy released through combustion, C/E, favors sequestration for fundamental reasons of…
