The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

The dynamics of the fine forest fuel's response to moisture changes have not been fully recognized. Fire behavior systems now in use consider all fine fuels to have a 1-hour response time. Experimental results of testing a wide range of fine fuels show the change in moisture…

Van Wagner, Pickett
Improved official equations are presented for the 1984 version of the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index System. The most recent mathematical refinements serve to further rationalize the Fine Fuel Moisture Code and render it more compatible with other developments in the…

Results and analysis of an experimental burning study on the fire behavior in boreal mixedwood slash in the northern Ontario's Clay Belt Region are presented. Horizontal discontinuity in this fuel type makes fire spread difficult when the fire danger rating is low to moderate.…

This report describes a study of the quality of - and uncertainty associated with - spot fire-weather forecasts prepared by National Weather Service (NWS) forecasters. The study involved the formulation of experimental probabilistic spot forecasts at four NWS offices for…

Cohen, Deeming
Updating the National Fire-Danger Rating System (NFDRS) was completed in 1977, and operational use of it was begun the next year. The System provides a guide to wildfire control and suppression by its indexes that measure the relative potential of initiating fires. Such fires do…

'Considering that most of us in the fire business are involved in management of at least some public land and that, regardless of land status, many of our actions or inactions are subject to public view and often public criticism, an awareness of the political scene, what it…

Weather data from Upsala and Atikokan, Ontario, were used to determine the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index System values and to calculate the soil moisture for two soil types using the Thornthwaite water balance. The Duff Moisture Code and the Drought Code were found to give…
