The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Four units totaling 1 hectare in area were burned during the summer of 1976 in the Washington Creek experimental fire site near Fairbanks, Alaska. Original vegetation on the site consisted of an unevenly spaced stand of black spruce approximately 70 years old, with an understory…

A method is presented for computing fine fuel moisture content at hourly intervals around the clock. It is derived from the standard daily Fine Fuel Moisture Code used in the Canadian system of forest fire danger rating. It produces diurnal cycles of fuel moisture content that…

From the text... 'The data in these tables and in the two additional tables listing "near-fatal” fires (Tables 3 and 4) help demystify these related fire types. It is possible to identify some common denominators of fire behavior in both fatal and near-fatal fires. It should be…

The turbulent characteristics of 17 Canadian cumulus clouds have been documented using the measurements from a specially instrumented T-33 aircraft. Most of the 33 cloud penetrations were made through the tops of cumuli 1—4.5 km in depth. Turbulent energy spectra over a range of…

A cloud seeding technique is proposed which has the objective of stimulating rainfall from cumulus clouds drifting over forest fires. Preliminary tests of the ice crystal production capability of the cloud seeding technique were conducted on five cumulus clouds near Yellowknife…

Simard, Graham, Young, Redmond
This report provides a set of Canadian forest fire statistics for the period 1961 to 1966. Data for 43,796 fires from every fire Control agency in Canada were processed and stored on magnetic tape. This report contains statistics on fire occurrence and fire suppression. Under…

This publication contains instructions for manually calculating the indexes and components of the 1978 National Fire-Danger Rating System (NFDRS). The procedures are explained with worked examples. Working sets of nomograms for the 20 NFDRS fuel models are not included. However…

A procedure for forecasting the 10-hour timelag fuel moisture was developed from the theory of diffusion in wood. Studies of fuel moisture processes relating meteorological variables, as an external force, to moisture exchange processes in wood are combined here to provide a…

A model has been developed for predicting the number of lightning-fire ignitions in wildland fuels. The model is based on both stochastic and physical processes. Stochastic methods are used to generalize the lightning storm characteristics and site conditions that affect the…

The 1978 National Fire-Danger Rating System (NFDRS) updates the danger rating system developed in the early 1970's and published by Deeming and others in 1972. Numerous changes have been made to correct deficiencies and to incorporate new technology. The most significant of the…

This paper presents formulae, tables, and figures that can be used to estimate the ratio of mean windspeed acting on the flame from a spreading wildland fire to the mean windspeed 20 ft (6 m) above the vegetation cover. The formulae for windspeed above uniform, continuous…

In the mixing of a jet with a cross-stream, it is found that in the near field, defined as the region of the flow from the jet exit to a distance of a few diameters downstream of this exit, a considerable amount of dynamical adjustment takes place. This near-field region…
