The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Fuel loading, fireline intensity, and expected fire size were determined after harvesting small-stem lodgepole pine stands. Curves relating predicted fireline intensity to slash fuel loading and windspeed are presented. Removing about 15 tons per acre of residues reduced…

Seeds of three species of dwarf mistletoe, Arceuthobium americanum Nutt. Ex Engelm., A. cyanocarpum Coulter & Nelson, and A. vaginatum subsp. cryptopodum (Engelm.) Hawksw. & Wiens, were exposed to smoke from burning forest fuels. Premeasured amounts of coniferous needles…

From the Introduction ... 'The vegetation mosaic in any landscape is a function of environmental variation and historic disturbances, whether caused by humans or other factors. Many studies have focused on species composition in relation to environmental gradients, and secondary…

In a south-facing subbasin of Caribou-Poker Creek Research Watershed near Fairbanks, several mature white spruce stringers, apparent relics of extensive stands that have escaped fires, were studied.Tree-ring investigations show that the mature spruce stringers have remained fire…

Sampling the forest floor to determine litter weight is a tedious,time-consuming job. A new device has been designed and tested at the Southern Forest Fire Laboratory that eliminates many of the past sampling problams. The sampler has been fabricated in two sizes (6- and 12-inch…

Fire management demands that we (1) mke the best use of whatis known to us, (2) add to our knowledge, (3) assess the possibilites andd the probabilities offuture events, (4) obtain meaningful pulic choices.

From the text:'The goal of research on the behaviour of forest fires is presumably to be able to predict with reasonable assurance how a fire will behave in any stated weather and forest fuel. This goal does not, of course, have an absolute form since the prediction of forest…

Describes design and construction of a system for creating a vertical, unbounded arc discharge in air. The arc is initiated by an exploding tungsten wire and is turned on and off by a silicon-controlled rectifier switching system. As a safety precaution, all circuits are…

The forest history around Marion Lake in southwestern British Columbia is reconstructed using plant macrofossil analysis. A comparison with a previous reconstruction based on pollen and spore analysis reveals a good correspondence between pollen and macrofossil zones.…

An experimental and theoretical examination of the mass burning and evaporation-rate structure of a bed of fine solid-fuel elements is made for several cases of quasi-steady firespread waves propagating along and into the surface of the bed. Several distinct regimes are found to…

Model experiments were performed in a preliminary study of the behaviour of a small ground fire in the lee of a tree. The fires were simulated by alcohol wick burners and the trees by vertical pipes. Data were taken up to RE = 20,000 with the burners located downwind of the…

Long-term effects of air pollutants in Finland have been studied by analyzing needle litter of pine (Pinus silvestris L.) and spruce (Picea abies L. Karst) in 13 stands from the years 1958 to 1982. A considerable annual increase in elemental concentrations was observed in the…
