The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Brown, Boster
Damage appraisal is the basis for fire-suppression decisions. Where timber is managed for production of maximum site rent, appraisal is a rather straightforward matter of applying standard financial criteria in a 'with and without' procedure. Where the aim is maximum mean annual…

From the text (p.193) ... 'The objective of the present paper is to examine the fire literature to draw attention to cases where fire has lead to ecosystem degradation or where the potential for long-term degradation exists.'

From the text...'As part of a general forest-fire-research program in recent years, considerable inquiry has been made into the visibility of smoke from forest fires in an attempt to answer the questions: How far can a lookout see a smoke? What are the factors upon which this…

The water vapour concentration at the bottom of the flame of the wood crib was measured and correlated with other experimentally obtained data like welling up gas temperature, char yield and UV-absorption of the condensible substance, and the mechanism of the water generation…

From the text...'The effect of burning on the germination and development of maquis plants allows the separation of the plants into two divisions: (1) plants like oak and Pistacia which have no store of seeds in the soil from former years. The fire destroys the seeds on these…

Simard, Young
From the Introduction: 'AIRPRO is a simulation model designed for computer implementation. Its purpose is to simulate the use of air tankers in wildland fire suppression operations. The model can be used to analyze a wide variety of questions with respect to air tanker systems,…

From the text:'In conclusion I would like to emphasize that the use to which fire ecology work is to be put must be kept in mind, namely to predict postfire vegetation development for an ecologic-economic input into fire and land management decision-making. This cannot be done…

This report presents a suggested list of metric units and conversion factors for quantities commonly used in forest fire research, and suitable also for practical use in operational work. It follows the approved standards of the International System of Units (SI).

This research ws conducted to determine how forest-fire behavior and its controlling variables differ between altitudes throughout the day on north and south slopes. Observations were made at eight stations, six of them paired on north and south aspects of 5,500-, 3,800-, and 2,…

Laminated sediment (presumed varved) from Greenleaf Lake was examined for evidence of forest fires. A 500-year section dating approximately 770—1270 AD. was analysed for influx of pollen, charcoal, aluminum, and vanadium using decadal samples. Intervals showing concurrent peaks…
