The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

From the Executive Summary (p.iv) ... 'A coordinated program of research on the 1988 fires should be intiated immediately. The essential ingredients for such a program include an ecosystem approach to provide conceptual integration and operational coordination of many individual…

A fire regime classification that recognizes stand-replacement, nonlethal understory, mixed and variable fire severities is discussed as a simplified approach for communicating widely about the natural role of fire. Examples of the fire regime types are provided. Five challenges…

'Documentation and analysis for fire behavior events should become a standard practice with Fire Behavior Analysts, and not 'a nice to do project'. The FBA has a responsibility bfore leaving a fire to tabulate pertinent data and to write a report that summarizesthe key factors…

Protection of resources from fire has increased the risk of severe fires and reduced resource values in some ecosystems. Constraints on use of prescribed fire have limited its effectiveness in meeting resource goals. This predicament is discussed by describing the ecological…

Classifications of airborne mutlispectral scanner data for forest defoliation assessment have generally met with only moderate success. Key factors affecting defoliation assessment (radiometric distortions within the imagery due to atmosphere, sun-object-viewer geometry and…

Economic limitations prevent the mapping over large areas of forest fire fuel types using conventional forestry methods. The information contained in such maps would be a valuable tool for assisting in initial attack planning, presuppression planning and fire growth modelling.…

The computed spatial dependence of graybody radiation from a specific cone shape, representative of small fires, showed the greatest radiation intensity directly above the cone. The inverse square law was accurate beyond a distance of three times the maximum cone dimension.…

Atmospheric composition, local climate and sapling gas exchange were monitored to assess the short-term effects of smoke-haze from the 1997 Indonesian forest fires. Atmospheric concentrations of particulate matter, SO2, CO, CH4 and CO2, and relative humidity were elevated, and…

In order to characterize the fires regime of the southern boreal forest and to understand the way in which landscape and fire regime interact, a detailed study of fire history was undertaken in two adjacent contrasting landscapes in northwestern Quebec. The fire history for the…
