The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

(1)The behaviour of the August 1936 Galatea fire in the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains was reconstructed with respect to the rate of spread, frontal-fire intensity and fuel consumption, and illustrates that tree mortality, seed dispersal distance into the burn and…

Fire, either as a natural occurrence or a management tool, can have beneficial effects on the environment, and its use offers opportunities for reducing fuel loads, disposing of slash, preparing seedbeds, thinning stands, increasing herbaceous plant production, increasing…

Obstacles to public acceptance of prescribed fire include misunderstanding of fire in forest ecosystems, concerned risk to life and property and assumed adverse effects on scenic and recreation values. Increased appreciation of the ecological, safety (fuel reduction) and…

Forest industry involvement in wildfire protection reduces fire risk and potential economic losses. This paper highlights Weldwood's Hinton Division involvement and goals towards wildfire control and management as a Forest Management Agreement (FMA) operator. Fire control…

Because of the natural and social amenities offered by suburban and rural living, more and more people are moving to wildland environments. The combination of people, homes, flammable vegetation, and dry weather conditions is increasing the annual losses from wildland fires and…

The problem of fire protection in the urban/wildland interface is a complex combination of three components: fire behavior and combustion, social and political factors, and the cooperation of property owners. By examing the problem's component parts, it is easier to understand…

Fire managers from five western regions of the USDA Forest Service were surveyed to determine which decision factors most strongly influenced their fire-risk behavior. Three fire-decision contexts were tested: Escaped Wildfire, Prescribed Burning, and Long-Range Fire Budget…

Laboratory studies of fire retardant corrosion have been conducted on four alloys commonly used in air and ground tankers and mixing plants. All currently used retardants met Forest Service specifications and requirements, but with considerable variations in performance.…

Water alone was the principal agent reducing flaming combustion to smoldering combustion; adding chemical retardant contributed only a slight additional reduction. Water alone was significantly less effective than chemical mixtures in reducing final energy release rates and…

Presents current (1988) fireline production rates for bulldozers, by size of machine, fuel type, slope, and site conditions. Includes nomograms and a master table for estimating production rates. Describes how data were collected and production rates were calculated.

Four commercially available forest fire retardants were studied to quantify their capabilities for flammability reduction using standard laboratory conditions and procedures. All the retardants proved to be closely matched in reducing flammability.

Describes procedures for applying the measured flow history of water or fire retardant from an airtanker and, with the aid of a model (PATSIM), developing a guide for attaining optimum retardant distribution from a specific airplane and tanking system. Text and drawings are…
