The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

(1)The behaviour of the August 1936 Galatea fire in the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains was reconstructed with respect to the rate of spread, frontal-fire intensity and fuel consumption, and illustrates that tree mortality, seed dispersal distance into the burn and…

From the text ... 'This article updates the uses of the fire severity index called the Haines Index (HI). We discuss the original intended use of HI, its current operational use, some ways that users have modified it, and different aspects of HI that researchers are examining to…

From the text (p.250) ... 'In addition to the materials reviewed by Williams in chapter 7, there are several ecological data sets that suggest aboriginal burning once accounted for most fires in the West, as well as in eastern forests. Brown et al. (1944), for instance, compared…

In this study we use historical relationships between weather, the Canadian Fire Weather Index (FWI) System components and ecozone area burned in Canada on a monthly basis in tandem with output from GCMs from the Canadian Climate Centre and the United Kingdom Hadley Centre to…

Charcoal records were examined from seven sediment cores and two stratigraphic sections on southern vancouver Island, Canada. charcoal influx and climate trend regressions were established using high order polynomial functions. During the late-glacial (ca. 13,000-10,000 ybp),…

Analysis of Ontario's historical records from 1941-1996 showed that spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.) caused whole tree mortality within 389 x 103 km2. This amounted to 9.2% of the annually cumulative area with moderate-severe defoliation. Large (>2 km2) fires…

Biomass combustion is an important primary source of particles with adsorbed biomarker compounds in the global atmosphere. The introduction of natural product organic compounds into smoke occurs primarily by direct volatilization/steam stripping and by thermal alteration based…

The combination of certain features of fire disturbance, notably fire frequency, size and severity, may be used to characterize the disturbance regime in any region of the boreal forest. As some consequences of fire resemble the effects of industrial forest harvesting,…

This study examines the influences of fuel, weather and topography on lightning-caused forest fires in portions of southern British Columbia and Alberta, Canada. The results show a significant difference in lightning and ligntning-caused fires east and west of the Continental…

Statistical quality-control methods were used to detect significant changes in the mean and variance of the annual fire occurrence and area burned in Canada (1918-2000), Ontario (1917-2000), and northwestern Ontario (1917- 2000). The quality-control chart method employed uses…

One of the goals of ecosystem management has been to maintain plant specie diversity. Emulating the "natural” (pre-European) fire regime is often proposed as a means of accomplishing this goal in fire-influenced boreal forest ecosystems. Here we examine this hypothesis as it…
