The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Soil was exposed to red phosphorous/butyl rubber (RP/BR) aerosols at various relative humidities in a recirculating environmental wind tunnel. Soil microbial and enzymatic activities were measured immediately after exposure and periodically thereafter for 56 days. The…

The resprouting response of different sized Banksia oblongifolia lignotubers (genets) was followed in two field experiments. In thefirst, the density and speed of resprouting, and the growth in length of the leading shoot from each lignotuber in response to fire and to the time…

(1)The behaviour of the August 1936 Galatea fire in the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains was reconstructed with respect to the rate of spread, frontal-fire intensity and fuel consumption, and illustrates that tree mortality, seed dispersal distance into the burn and…

Population characteristics of sympatric Testudo hermanni and T graeca were compared at four sites in northern Greece; Alyki, Epanomi, Keramoti and Lagos. These had different habitats and levels of human disturbance. The density of tortoises larger than 10cm was similar at all…

Small experimental plots in mixed-wood stands of the Acadian Forest were burned in the spring, summer, and autumn to obtain an estimate of the regrowth potential of common forest understory species. The number of stems was measured before burning and then monthly for 5 months…

From the text: 'In my opinion, professional foresters should be working much harder to get the facts across on prescribed burning because if we don't I feel forest management could suffer from restrictive rules or laws, both at the State and Federal level. There are still some…

'The control aspects of fire management from the hand raked fireline to the maintained firebreak can produce form, line, color & texture contrasts. Just as these contrasts can produce undesirable results, they can be used productively. It should be obvious by now that…

A procedure for forecasting the 10-hour timelag fuel moisture was developed from the theory of diffusion in wood. Studies of fuel moisture processes relating meteorological variables, as an external force, to moisture exchange processes in wood are combined here to provide a…

A set of value concepts and methods for appraising both values-at-risk and change in value resulting from wildfire are presented. Emphasis is placed on the effects of forest fires in terms of their affects on human and organization goal achievement. Fire effects that help…

Emission factors and the size distribution for smoke particles from prescribed fire are described from data collected by airborne sampling, surface sampling using towers, and combustion hood systems. Emission factors for particulate matter (g/kg) range from 4 to 16 for particles…

Fire management is a much talked about subject these days, but a lot more people are talking about it than practicing it. Although the fire management concept grew out of our traditional fire control activities, significant changes in practice have been excruciatingly slow in…
