The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Hailey, Wright, Steer
Population characteristics of sympatric Testudo hermanni and T graeca were compared at four sites in northern Greece; Alyki, Epanomi, Keramoti and Lagos. These had different habitats and levels of human disturbance. The density of tortoises larger than 10cm was similar at all…

Nelson, Adkins
Data for the behavior of 59 experimental wind-driven fires were extracted from the literature for use in determining a correlation among several variables known to influence the rate of forest fire spread. Also included in the correlation were unpublished data from six field…

González-Cabán, McKetta
Economically sound decisions on fuel treatment require knowledge of treatment costs. Fuel treatment costs derived using an economic cost concept on two National Forests were found to be higher than reported by accounting methods. Costs are sufficiently high and variable to…

The 1978 National Fire-Danger Rating System does not work well in the humid environment of the Eastern United States. System modifications to correct problems and their operational impact on System users are described. A new set of 20 fuel models is defined and compared…

Burgan, Susott
Describes how to compute indexes and components for the 1978 National Fire-Danger Rating System using the Hewlett-Packard 71B handheld calculator and custom memory. Predicting fire behavior with the HP-71B is described in a separate publication, "Fire Behavior Computations with…

Dry, unstable air increases the probability that wildland fires will become large and/or erratic. This paper describes an atmospheric index for these fires, based on the environmental lapse rate of a layer of air coupled with its moisture content. In low-elevation regions of the…

Taylor, Cortner, Gardner, Daniel, Zwolinski, Carpenter
Data from three separate but related surveys address the linkages between recreation and public perception of attitudes toward fire management. Recreation ranks high among alternative forest resource uses and is a serious concern vis-a-vis fire effects. Public acceptance of new…

Arno, Fischer
The advent of 'fire management' has increased the need to understand and predict fire effects on vegetation. Such prediction is greatly complicated by the many factors that influence fire characteristics and plant response. Nevertheless, a few approaches have been developed to…

Linton, Safranyik
Published literature dealing with the taxonomy, biology, ecology and management of the spruce beetle, Dendroctonus rufpennis (Kirby), has been briefly annotated. This bibliography contains 311 references, with author and subject indexes. Its purpose is to provide easy access to…

The present infestation is believed to have developed from a combination of factors: 1) large amounts of breeding material resulting from the Rosie Creek Fire and broken tops originating from heavy snowfalls in the 1984-85 winter, and 2) abnormally low snowfall in 1985-86 and…

Publisher Summary: Coarse woody debris (CWD) is an important component of temperate stream and forest ecosystems. This chapter reviews the rates at which CWD is added and removed from ecosystems, the biomass found in streams and forests, and many functions that CWD serves. CWD…

It happens to most firefighters sooner or later if they have been on the job long enough. Everything along the fireline seems fairly well controlled. But then, unexpectedly, the wind shifts and becomes erratic. Wind speed picks up dramatically for 5 to 15 minutes and then…
