The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Buoyancy production rates for a pure heat source and for a fire heat source of burning woody fuels show that fire may be regarded as pure source yielding heated air rather than heated combustion products.

Rhizina undulata Fr. occurred on about one-third of the 160 logging sites sampled 1 year after each area was burned. Three years after burning, apothecia were rarely found. The fungus causes mortality of seedlings planted on burned sites. Severity of attack within a seedling…

This paper discusses the occurrence of man-caused forest fires during the summer fire season in a section of northwestern Ontario. Fire occurrence is viewed as being a chance process and a stochastic model is developed to describe it. The results of this study indicate that a…

In testing accuracy of the planar intersect method, bias due to nonhorizontal orientation of woody particles ranged from 8 to 39 percent. Bias due to the use of arithmetic average diameters instead of quadratic mean diameters for solving volume equations ranged from 9 to 16…

The data necessary for fire simulation may be made available through an algorithm based on tracing of boundaries composed of straight-line segments. Useful assumptions are that if a closed boundary does not contain a given point, then any other closed boundary contained within…

Increasing expenditures for forest fire retardant and the development of more efficient delivery systems have emphasized the need for more knowledge on the transmission and retention characteristics of wildland fuels. In a series of tests, retardant was cascaded from an airplane…

A method is presented for the evaluation of the heating efficiency required for ignition as a spreading fire closes with fuel. An array of thermocouples was implanted in the fuel ahead of the fire to obtain the heat absorbed by the fuel prior to ignition. The fraction absorbed…

An inconsistency arises in Rothermel's fire spread model when there are two or more categories. If a fuel load is split into identical classes in two separate categories, the reaction intensity is less than if the load is contained in a single class in one category. The author…

Animal exposure studied and large scale fire data indicate that one of the early life hazards in a developing fire is from the generation of carbon monoxide and other combustion gases. A gas chromatograph as been interfaced to an NBS Smoke Chamber to study the rate of generation…

A relation between fire behavior and crown scorch height is derived from measurements on 13 experimental outdoor fires. The range of data includes fire intensities from 16 to 300 kcal/s-m, and scorch heights from 2 to 17 m. The results agree with established theory that scorch…

There are many uses for prescribed burning in the management of forests, chaparral, grasslands, watersheds, and wildlife. Some of these uses have been pointed out in this paper. There are also many dangers in using fire, both in its application and in its results. To minimize…
