The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

One 20-acre spruce-fir slash block was burned at moderate fire hazard. Weather, fuel-sampling, ignition pattern and fire effects are reported. The burn effectively reduced the slash-fuel-loading to a level where the spread of wildfire through the residual fires is unlikely and…

From the text ... 'The United States Forest Service, which manages nearly 200 million acres of public land, believes limited thinning and burning will prevent catastrophic wildfires. The agency contracts with logging companies to cut down large and small trees across sweeping…

The USDA Forest Service is implementing a new planning rule and starting to revise forest plans for many of the 155 National Forests. In forests that historically had frequent fire regimes, the scale of current fuels reduction treatments has often been too limited to affect fire…

From the text ... 'Wildland fire managers face increasingly steep challenges to meet air quality standards while planning prescribed fire and its inevitable smoke emissions. The goals of sound fire management practices, including fuel load reduction through prescribed burning,…

Fighting fire with fire has been given the green light by a new study of techniques used to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires. And with a rise in wildfires predicted in many parts of the country, researchers say controlled burns and other treatments to manage this risk…

The current conditions of many seasonally dry forests in the western and southern United States, especially those that once experienced low- to moderate-intensity fire regimes, leave them uncharacteristically susceptible to high-severity wildfire. Both prescribed fire and its…

Firebrand transport is studied for disc and cylindrical firebrands by modelling their trajectories with a coupled-physics fire model, HIGRAD/FIRETEC. Through HIGRAD/FIRETEC simulations, the size of possible firebrands and travelled distances are analysed to assess spot ignition…

The Joint Fire Science Program (JSFP) is supporting a project aimed at synthesizing the currently available information on crown fire behavior in conifer forests (e.g., the onset of crowning, type of crown fire and the associated spread rate and fireline intensity). In addition…

From the text ... 'In the definition of ecological factors important to mammals fire usually has not been ranked with temperature, moisture, or light, or even with soil, shelter, or seasonality. However, fire and fire perpetuated environments, such as grasslands, have been of…

From the Introduction: 'It is only recently, however, that prescribed burning has been introduced in Manitoba and Saskatchewan and, consequently, relatively few peple in these provinces are experienced in its use. It is for this reason that this note has been prepared-to serve…

From the summary ... ' In summary, the results of these large scale fire tests, conducted under marginal burning conditions, were negative; but, paradoxically, I find this very heartening, for we can now be much more confident in our predictions of fire behavior to be expected…

The Sundance Fire and its impressive run were not due to any new phenomena but the combination of several important factors. Extremely dry fuels and favourable weather conditions existed at the time; the atmospheric winds increased steadily thorughout the day, and the fire did…
