The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

From the text ... 'In this particular paper, as a fire ecologist, I am not primarily interested in the economic use of fire for man, but rather in the ecological relations of fire to plants, animals, and man in those interesting and sometimes peculiar adjustments, preadaptations…

A series of graphs, tables and maps are presented that form the basis of a revised fire control plan at the Petawawa Forest Experiment Station. Called aids to fire control planning, they are classified into those describing: (a) the pattern of fire weather, (b) the trends in…

Improved official equations are presented for the 1984 version of the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index System. The most recent mathematical refinements serve to further rationalize the Fine Fuel Moisture Code and render it more compatible with other developments in the…

Results and analysis of an experimental burning study on the fire behavior in boreal mixedwood slash in the northern Ontario's Clay Belt Region are presented. Horizontal discontinuity in this fuel type makes fire spread difficult when the fire danger rating is low to moderate.…

This report describes a study of the quality of - and uncertainty associated with - spot fire-weather forecasts prepared by National Weather Service (NWS) forecasters. The study involved the formulation of experimental probabilistic spot forecasts at four NWS offices for…

Updating the National Fire-Danger Rating System (NFDRS) was completed in 1977, and operational use of it was begun the next year. The System provides a guide to wildfire control and suppression by its indexes that measure the relative potential of initiating fires. Such fires do…

Weather data from Upsala and Atikokan, Ontario, were used to determine the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index System values and to calculate the soil moisture for two soil types using the Thornthwaite water balance. The Duff Moisture Code and the Drought Code were found to give…

A number of nondestructive techniques for analyzing the timing, frequency, and magnitude of natural disturbances in forest stands are discussed in this paper. Intensive age determination of trees is desirable for reconstructing forest disturbance history, but age distrubution…
