The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Aerial ignition using plastic spheres (similar to ping-pong balls) charged with potassium permanganate activated by ethylene glycol and dropped from a low flying helicopter is a proven system to safely prescribe burn large areas in a short time for rough reduction and site…

Aerial drip torch devices have potential for dramatically increasing acreage burned annually. Aerial burning requires different and broader concepts than hand burrning, more advance planning, more attention to detail, and at least a basic understanding of helicopter operations.

The history of the Clean Air Act is reviewed from 1955 to 1980. The 1980 Visibility Regulation is cited as the first federal clean air policy which specifically addresses prescribed burning. Thirty-six states containing National Parks and Wilderness areas are now required to…

Recent attempts to model the flow in very hot fire plumes where radiative transport of heat may significantly modify both the dynamics of the flow and the processes of combustion have met with only partial success. This paper gives an account of a model for the flow in a…

We present evidence that fire suppression may have contributed to the fungal decline of torreya (Torreya taxifolia). During the 1950's torreya suffered a catastrophic die-back. The torreya die-back was probably caused by needle pathogens induced through environmental stress.…

This review summarizes the available literature relevant to British Columbia concerning the influences of harvesting and post-harvest practices upon the forest environment and resources, and points out significant gaps in knowledge where research would be useful. This will aid…

Seeds of three species of dwarf mistletoe, Arceuthobium americanum Nutt. Ex Engelm., A. cyanocarpum Coulter & Nelson, and A. vaginatum subsp. cryptopodum (Engelm.) Hawksw. & Wiens, were exposed to smoke from burning forest fuels. Premeasured amounts of coniferous needles…
