The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Wildfires have caused significant ecological and social losses in terms of forest benefits, private dwellings, and suppression costs. Although great efforts have been made in wildfire policies and wildfire-mitigating strategies on private and public lands, devastating wildfires…

Wildfire risks are increasing due to the atmospheric and vegetation aridity under global warming. Plant hydraulic stress (PHS) functions regulate water transport along the soil–plant–atmosphere continuum under water stress conditions, which probably results in shifts in…

Background: When fighting high-intensity wildfire, firefighters may construct a defensive fireline (fuel break) away from the raging front. The path of the fireline is the key to successful fire containment. However, the study of fireline path optimisation in the literature is…

Fire detection based on computer vision technology can avoid many flaws in conventional methods. However, existing methods fail to achieve a good trade-off in accuracy, model size, speed, and cost. This paper presents a high-performance forest fire recognition algorithm to solve…

Grassfires in Canada’s western prairies have been observed to propagate over multi-hour periods with sustained rates of spread in excess of 6.0 km/h. For example, on December 14, 1997, a human-caused grassfire starting west of Claresholm in southern Alberta advanced eastward…

Wildfire propagation is a non-linear and multiscale system in which multiple physical and chemical processes are involved. One critical mechanism in the spread of wildfires is so-called fire-spotting: a random phenomenon that occurs when embers are transported over large…

Based on analysis of the interaction between a spreading fire and its surrounding environment, in nominally constant and uniform boundary conditions, it is observed that the evolution of the fire front is characterised by fluctuations of its properties, including (in particular…
