The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

This report documents a prescribed fire emissions inventory developed using consistent methodology for each of the 50 states of the USA for calendar year 1989. Emissions of particulate matter, selected toxic compounds, and a few other carbon-containing compounds are estimated.…

The Mann Gulch fire, which overran 16 firefighters in 1949, is analyzed to show its probable movement with respect to the crew. The firefighters were smoke-jumpers who had parachuted near the fire on August 5, 1949. While they were moving to a safer location, the fire blocked…

We correct the variance for the rate of spread of a fire through a non-homogeneous fuel as described in Catchpole et al. (1989, Ecol. Modelling, 48: 101-112). The spatial dependence of the fuel types can greatly influence this variance; a phenomenon not expressed by the analysis…

Knowledge of fire behavior is critical for those who control wildfires. Fire managers must know spread rates and intensity-not just to eventually contain and extinguish the fire but also to keep their fire control personnel safe. Managers realize that weather is paramount in…

Mechanized full-tree logging is the preferred harvesting system in Northeastern Ontario. These operations typically involve roadside delimbing, producing large quantities of slash at roadsides and landings. Slash pile burning involves gathering the slash into concentrated areas…

1. A fire of unusually great severity (deep burning) burned across the forest-tundra near Inuvik, Northwest Territories from August 8 to 18, 1968. 2. Burned-unburned paired study sites around the fire perimeter, which had been established in both tundra and forest-tundra in 1973…

Traditionally, in the Southwest, ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) red slash has not been treated with fire to meet resource objectives until all slash has fully cured, usually a 2-to-4-year wait. Waiting for slash to cure is still the widespread practice on most forests in the…

The Canadian Climate Centre's General Circulation Model provides two 10-year data sets of simulated daily weather for a large array of gridpoints across North America. A subset of this data, comprised of only those points within the forested part of Canada, was selected for…

The 1988 National Fire Danger System implements the Keetch-Byran Drought Index. This indexis output both as an estimator of drought in its own right and is used to modify fire danger calculations to account for deep drying of dead vefetation and duff. A method initializes this…

Surface fire intensity (kW m[-1]) and crown fire initiation were predicted using Rothermel's (1972) and Van Wagner's (1977) models, with fuel data from 47 subalpine conifer stands and 35 years of daily weather (moisture contents and windspeeds). Rothermel's intensity equations…

A series of laboratory fire experiments were conducted in fuel beds consisting of either excelsior (wood wool), or 6.35 mm sticks, or a mixture of these. Tests were done both with and without wind. Various characteristics of the fire, including rate of spread and fireline…

An extension of the simple ellipse model of a vegetation fire is presented. This facilitates numerical implementation, and can therefore incorporate irregular topographical features and temporal changes in burning conditions. The model has been encoded into an interactive PC…

Published data on two sets of experimental fires in jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) forest were subjected to two forms of analysis. The first was a classification into surface fires and two kinds of crown fire, passive and active. In the second, the data were used to develop a…

ANNOTATION: High transport costs are a factor to consider in the use of forest residues for fuel. Costs can be reduced by increasing haul capacities, reducing high moisture contents, and improving trucking efficiency. The literature for transpirational drying and the economics…
