The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Large stand-replacing fires at intervals of 50 to 500 years were responsible for the vegetation patterns of parks and wilderness areas in the Boreal, Great Lakes-Acadian, Rocky Mountain, and Douglas-fir regions. Fire recurrence is closely linked to stand age in some ecosystems.…

From the summary:'Experimental study on the visibility through fire smoke was carried out. The relation among the brightness of sign, visual distance, and the extinction coefficient of smoke at the instant of obscuration threshold was obtained by using the smoke chamber. The…

Results and analysis of an experimental burning study on the fire behavior in boreal mixedwood slash in the northern Ontario's Clay Belt Region are presented. Horizontal discontinuity in this fuel type makes fire spread difficult when the fire danger rating is low to moderate.…

From the text: 'Obviously an extremely professional task of development, research and management looms ahead. Moreover, to manage land and protect its resources in the true public interest requires involvement of an informed citizenry in many managerial and policy decisions.…

From the text...'But we must be concerned with all the products of our forest lands and the successful forest manager will be aware of the tools and techniques that optimize integrated uses. This must be done in the long range view. Thus, we must know more about fire and our…

From the text...'In closing I should emphasize that purposeful use of fire has not yet had much impact on western forest ecosystems. It is rapidly developing an impact on some ponderosa pine lands, however, notably some Indian lands managed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs in…

Moisture content, owing to its direct effect on flammability of forest fuels, must be incorporated into a fire danger rating system. Accurate indicators of moisture content in different fuels are particularly important when separate burning tables are required for major fuel…

Updating the National Fire-Danger Rating System (NFDRS) was completed in 1977, and operational use of it was begun the next year. The System provides a guide to wildfire control and suppression by its indexes that measure the relative potential of initiating fires. Such fires do…

'Considering that most of us in the fire business are involved in management of at least some public land and that, regardless of land status, many of our actions or inactions are subject to public view and often public criticism, an awareness of the political scene, what it…

The objective of this paper is to explain the distributions, assumptions, interpretations, and relationships of the two compatible, stochastic models of fire history: the negative exponential and the Weibull. For each model the 'fire interval' and 'time-since-fire' distributions…
