The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Butson, Knowles, Farmer
SUMMARY: ( 1) Samples of three naturally occurring, disjunct stands of Pinus resinosa Ait. (red pine) located in the general vicinity of Lake Nipigon, Ontario were mapped, cored for age-estimation, and measured for growth in diameter. (2) The two most western populations showed…

Fuel loading, fireline intensity, and expected fire size were determined after harvesting small-stem lodgepole pine stands. Curves relating predicted fireline intensity to slash fuel loading and windspeed are presented. Removing about 15 tons per acre of residues reduced…

Grassland burning elicits a diverse array of responses by arthropods, depending upon many interactive factors. Empirical models were develoed, based on the literature, to qualitatively order selected behavioral characteristics of fire, arthropod life habits and phenology,…

From the text:'This article reports a laboratory attempt to measure the combined effects of sun and wind on surface temperature, and to test the form that a predictive equation should take. The general approach was suggested by some previous research on this question, which is…

Describes design and construction of a system for creating a vertical, unbounded arc discharge in air. The arc is initiated by an exploding tungsten wire and is turned on and off by a silicon-controlled rectifier switching system. As a safety precaution, all circuits are…

From the text:'This paper compares INFROMAP with other information assembly and display systems, describes the concept and basic charcteristics of the system, explains how it may be used in fire planning and fire control, and considers the outlook for its future developement.'

Seven composite samples of western red cedar and western hemlock logging slash of 0.25 to 2 inches diameter were exposed on top of and within the bottom third of a fuel bed in the interior wet belt of British Columbia in August 1965. Their moisture contents were measured…

Long-term effects of air pollutants in Finland have been studied by analyzing needle litter of pine (Pinus silvestris L.) and spruce (Picea abies L. Karst) in 13 stands from the years 1958 to 1982. A considerable annual increase in elemental concentrations was observed in the…

The contributions of expanded continental ice, reduced atmospheric carbon dioxide, and changes in land albedo to the maintenance of the climate of the last glacial maximum (LGM) are examined. A series of experiments is performed using an atmosphere-mixed layer ocean model in…

A method is proposed for predicting a probabilistic distribution of fire behavior. A fire model gives conditional distributions of the physical fire site parameters one would observe for given fire states. The probabilistic prediction is provided by Bayes formula and knowledge…
