The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

During a 4-year period the biomass and mass of selected chemical elements were measured in litter fall from young, intermediate, and mature age classes of quaking aspen and paper birch in interior Alaska. Average annual deposition of biomass and mass of Mg, Fe, and Mn were…

Habitat preference by caribou (Rangifer tarandus grantii Allen.) and forage selection and consumption by tame reindeer (R. t. tarandus L.) were studied near Atkasook, Alaska, for 3 yr. Small groups of caribou were present in both winter and summer. Winter habitat use was…

Eighty black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) trees from four pulpwood stands in north central Ontario were sampled to determine crown fuel weights. Crown fuel components, both living and dead, were separated into size classes precise enough for use in forest fire behavior…

The altitudinal movements, preferred topography and plant communities of 150 to 200 woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) were recorded for two summers. Nine subalpine or alpine tundra communities constituting their major summer range were quantitatively described.…

An analysis of samples collected in 1976 from 2 sites in mature open spruce/lichen woodland in Quebec, unburned for 105 and 138 yr, and dominated by Picea glauca, P. mariana, Ledum groenlandicum and Betula glandulosa; and from 3 regenerating sites, burned 1, 5 and 45 yr…

The past and present fire regimes are described, and the significance for the flora of this region is discussed. Methods used to reconstruct forest fire history are presented. The dating problems with false and absent rings in Scots pine, Norway spruce and two birch species…

Reindeer vegetation-type selection, activity, and food habits were studied from 1976 to 1978. Results from aerial surveys and on-ground observations showed a preference for Tussock-Shrub Tundra in spring, Low-Medium Willows in early summer, and Saltgrass Meadows in mid-summer…

Trend of the Nelchina caribou range was determined from vegetation examinations of 36 ten and fifteen year old exclosures. Condition of climax lichen stands, primarily Cladonia alpestris, began to degenerate with two to three years of use and has declined substantially in the…

The long term fire history at the treeline in Northern Quebec can be evaluated by ecological surveys of the major ecosystems. Available data suggest that fires are presently climate-controlled, and therefore may be used as paleoclimatic indicators. During a cold climatic…

Mapping of gross features of snowcover accumulation and melt patterns using LANDSAT (satellite) imagery provides a synoptic view of changing snow conditions affecting migratory caribou, of particular value when used in conjunction with more detailed data from snow stations.…

Much of the pioneer work in reindeer/caribou range ecology was carried out in the Soviet Union. More recently major contributions to this field of knowledge have been made by Scandinavian and North American biologists. Early work was of a descriptive nature, while a current…

Evidence from 10 years of fire records and 300 years of tree ages and fire scars indicate that forest fires in a large area east of Great Slave Lake, N.W.T. are recurrent over a short time interval (<125 years) and related to large scale air mass climate patterns and terrain…

Five 7.3m x 7.3m exclosures were constructed on winter range following grazing. All feeding craters within the sites were permanently marked. The exclosures were later examined, disassembled and the crater outlines super-imposed on vegetation maps. The procedure was repeated on…
