The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

We explore the use of spatially correlated random treatments to reduce fuels in landscape patterns that appear somewhat natural while forming fully connected fuelbreaks between wildland forests and developed protection zones. From treatment zone maps partitioned into grids of…

It is now recognized that in the Canadian boreal forest, timber harvesting activities have replaced wildfires as the main stand-replacing disturbance. Differences in landscape patterns derived from these two sources of disturbance have, however, raised concerns that the way…

Question: What are the drivers of bryophyte succession in paludifying boreal Picea mariana forests? Location: The Clay-Belt of Quebec and Ontario, Canada. Methods: The bryophyte community and habitat variables (forest floor thickness, water table, stand density, canopy openness…

Aim: This paper describes the characteristics of the spatio-temporal distribution of vegetation fires as detected from satellite data for the 12 months April 1992 to March 1993. Location: Fires are detected daily at a spatial resolution of 1 km for all land areas of the globe.…

Forest fire size distribution (FSD) is one of the suite of indicators of forest fire regimes. It is applied in forest fire management, particularly for planning and evaluating suppression efforts. It is also used in forest management in the context of emulating natural fire…

We examined the effects of woody substrate and stand age on diversity and relative abundance of bryophytes, lichens, and fungi in trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) mixedwood boreal forests in Alberta. Point sampling was carried out on surfaces of downed woody material…

In this paper I wish to review certain facets of the role of fire in the ecology of forest game, then go on to speculate about how forest fire protection may influence populations of forest wildlife. Before considering the effects of fire on game, it is necessary to remember…

Butler, Finney, Andrews, Albini
A numerical model for the prediction of the spread rate and intensity of forest crown fires has been developed. The model is the culmination of over 20 years of previously reported fire modelling research and experiments; however, it is only recently that it has been formulated…

Fire shelters are required equipment for most wildland firefighters in the United States. In this study we report flame emissive power and temperatures inside and outside fire shelters placed in one prescribed fire, five experimental field fires, and one laboratory fire. Energy…

Recent research has demonstrated that juvenile-stage woody plants from Alaska and E. Siberia have more defenses against browsing by hares (Lepus spp.) in winter than similar plants in subarctic regions. Feeding trials were carried out in which snowshoe hare (L. americanus) were…

A close relationship between organic-carbon content and bulk density was utilized to develop equations for predicting the bulk densities of inorganic soils around the Gulf of Alaska. Most of the samples used in developing these equations were from B and C horizons, but they…

The insular population of barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus) on Coats Island, Northwest Territories, is ultimately limited by winter food resources. This study was undertaken to assess forage biomass available during summer and to determine the effects of…

Over the last few years anomalies in temperature and precipitation in northern Russia have been regarded as manifestations of climate change. During the same period exceptional forest fire seasons have been reported, prompting many authors to suggest that these in turn are due…
