The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

The history of the Clean Air Act is reviewed from 1955 to 1980. The 1980 Visibility Regulation is cited as the first federal clean air policy which specifically addresses prescribed burning. Thirty-six states containing National Parks and Wilderness areas are now required to…

Hartford, Frandsen
Fire effects on aplant community, soil, and air are not apparent when judged only by surface fire intensity. The fire severity or fire impact can be described by the temperatures reached within the forest floor and the duration of heating experienced in the vegetation, forest…

From the text...'The purpose of this document is to provide technical information on prescribed burning. It does so in two ways. One, it provides background information useful in determining reasonably available control measures (RACM) and best available control measures (BACM)…

Present uses of prescribed fire in Canada are reviewed. Fire has been a natural component of many forested North American landscapes for millennia, making it an obvious choice as an effective forest management tool. It can be used in harmony with known fire adaptations of…

This guide, based on a literature review and personal contacts, offers recommendations and standards for procedures in reducing losses of residences from wildfires. Possible solutions to the problem of fire protection are discussed in the broad areas of land-use planning and…

FOCUS (Fire Operational Characteristics Using Simulation) is a computer simulation model for evaluating alternative fire management plans. This final report provides a broad overview of the FOCUS system, describes two major modules-fire suppression and cost, explains the role in…

FIREMAP is a simulation system designed to estimate wildfire characteristics in spatially non-uniform environments and simulate the growth of fire in discrete time steps. This simulation system integrates Rothermel's behavior prediction model (Rothermel 1972) with a raster-…

Logistic regression was used in examining the relationship between National Fire Danger Rating System (NFDRS) indexes and historical fire occurrence data. Basic techniques of constructing and testing logistic regression models are presented at a modest mathematical level. The…

Forest fire systems are compared to the balsam/spruce budworm system. Management of both has been successful in the short term in reducing the probability of fire or preventing sudden and extensive mortality of balsam. But both have resulted in conditions highly vulnerable to…

Ballard, Spraker, Taylor
During spring 1977 and 1978, 136 moose (Alces alces gigas) calves were radio-collared in the Nelchina and Susitna river basins of south central Alaska in an effort to determine causes of mortality. Thirteen calves (9.5%) died as a result of collaring activities. Of the 123…
